All About Hair Porosity

I’ve always had a problem with retaining moisture and I thought I could resolve this problem by just using hair lotions. It was not until I learned about hair porosity that I realized why it is that it’s easy for my hair to absorb moisture but hard for my hair to retain it. It was also interesting to learn that there is also a reason why hair can resist moisture as well. Keep reading!

Hair Porosity

High Porosity

-Having high porosity hair means that your hair absorbs moisture but lacks moisture retention. Your hairs cuticles are more open. High porosity hair is usually very dry and it lets out product just as fast as it absorbs it.

Low Porosity

-Having low porosity hair means that your hair resists moisture and is prone to build up and your hair cuticles also lay flat. It may take a while for your hair to absorb moisture and your hair can also be protein sensitive. With heat, it may be easier for moisture to be absorbed.

How to Test Your Hair’s Porosity

If you’re unsure of your hair’s porosity, there’s no need to worry, there are actually tests you can conduct to figure it out.

Test 1- Fill up a cup with room temperature water. Then, take a strand of hair and drop it in the water without pushing it in. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, if your hair is still floating on top of the water, that means your hair is low porosity. If your hair is floating in the middle, this means you have normal porosity hair and it is absorbing some water. If your hair sinks to the bottom, that means your hair is of high porosity.

Test 2- Rub your fingers up and down a strand of your hair. If the strand has bumps or ridges, you have high porosity hair. If the strand does not have any bumps or ridges, you have normal to low porosity hair.

Becoming more knowledgeable about your hairs porosity can definitely help you better care for it. I now understand why my hair is always so dry, and realize what I need to do to help retain moisture. So, I really hope this helps you as well!
