If you did not know, yesterday was the 2018 Golden Globe Awards. While it was a very memorable night for many celebrities, Oprah Winfrey stole the show. She is the first black woman to accept the Cecil B. Demille Award. As she gracefully accepted her award, she had a very strong message to young girls who were watching. As many may know, sexual harassment in the entertainment industry has been getting addressed quite frequently in Hollywood lately. Oprah Winfrey’s message arose because of this as well as everyone in attendance at the Golden Globes wore black to protest sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment is something that can occur no matter where you are, who you are or where you come from. It’s very obvious that Oprah Winfrey has been inspired by women who have found the strength to “speak their truth.” She spoke about a black woman named Recey Taylor who was raped by 6 white men in 1944. None of the men ever got convicted for their crime even though she spoke up.
“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, BUT THEIR TIME IS UP.”
“I want all the girls watching here, now to know that a new day is on the horizon, and when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight — and some pretty phenomenal men — fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say #MeToo again.”
Simply hearing all these words leave Winfrey’s mouth made me so proud. You could see that it made every woman in that room extremely proud as well. Her speech gave me a sense empowerment and assurance that times are indeed changing. Women all over are taking back their power and this proves that issues such as sexual harassment will not get swept under the rug.
